Dark Eyed JuncosOBJECTIVE

Jim Mahfood gave the Kansas City Art Institute’s Illustration department an Album Cover Assignment where we were to create a record album based on a fictional band of a genre of our choice with a limited color palette of black, white, and three other colors.

Drawing from my love of nature, the band name came from the name of a bird called Dark-Eyed Juncos and the title arrived from a list of words and phrases for possible song names. Out of the names, I found When the World Goes Dark to provide an interesting narrative to illustrate. As a result I choose an old lantern long burned out with vines growing up and around it, the album title appearing on the glass. Floral motifs and the hand lettering for the band name hint towards the folk/country genre.
