“Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, you know what’s even scarier? Regret.”

This painting was inspired by some rather large life changes for myself, which people encounter throughout their lives. Symbology of the octopus such as change, flexibility, creativity, intelligence, adaptability are combined with that of water — which also symbolizes flexibility, adaptability, and creativity as it takes the form in which it is held — and the universe, which consists of the unknown but also possibility.

The octopus is an incredible creature, able to slip out of the tightest of places, moving slowly or quickly, known to symbolism how people can head towards their goals in unusual ways to achieve similar or the same results. They can also camouflage with their surroundings and are also extremely intelligent with the ability to use logic.

This painting is also one where I experienced with oils, using different methods I hadn’t tried before as well as pushing my style. Making it past the ugly stage, I truly enjoyed the peaceful process of creating this painting. The title is a reference to The Beatles song, Octopus’s Garden.
