Say hello to Lion’s Mane! 👋 A huge thanks to @boulder_mushroom for inviting me to visit his mushroom farm in Boulder, just 5 min away from the office of my day job. He let me photograph some Lion’s Mane that was recently harvested that I used as reference for this illustration. If you ever get the chance to visit a mushroom farm, I HIGHLY recommend it! Plus, I am currently trying out one of his Oyster grow kits ☺️

Lion’s Mane mushroom are large, white, shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lion’s mane 🦁 as they grow, hence their common name. Since their flavor is often described as “seafood-like,” they taste fantastic when cooked up as Lion’s Mane “crab” cakes – I made some a few weeks ago so I can check this mushroom off my list of one’s I’ve tried. Plus, there’s some research that suggests one of the many healing properties of Lion’s Mane could be that it helps with anxiety and depression (sign me up!)

Happy #mayshroom 🍄

The first prompt is ✨beginnings✨ And this is a question I’ve answered quite a bit recently – how I got started with my fungi obsession. So let me take you on a little journey… 🤪

I was 15 years old when I got my first quality camera (aka not a phone) to help with my anxiety disorder. It was a Nikon Coolpix that I have since upgraded from. But how did a camera help with my anxiety? It got me out of the house, of course!

It was a reason to go walk outside even if it was just up the street. And looking through the lens brought a whole other world to my attention – the small world of macro photography. Mycology 🍄, entomology 🐝, and botany 🌱 were subjects I became fascinated with.

I like to think of mushrooms as little presents that can be found on my walks or hikes. But it wasn’t until much later that I discovered the added bonus of edible fungi. From Morels and Oysters to Hawk’s Wings and Chanterelles, there are so many out there! And thankfully, mushrooms and foraging has shot up in popularity since I was 15. A whole mushroom community has been unearthed and I get to be a part of it 😊

I thought it was about time I introduced myself (I believe this is the first time actually) BUT while I hate photos of myself, I had to do a photoshoot for when Voyage Denver interviewed me and it happened to be on a good hair day, so 🤷‍♀️

My name is Alicia and I'm an artist based on Colorado. I thought I'd start off with 9 random facts (since I'm 29):

1. I'm a triplet – this simple fact is almost ALWAYS my "most interesting fact" about myself to default to. I'm also the youngest
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. I've loved art for as long as I can remember and have always wanted to be an artist. I've also had an interest in how things are made and apparently once drew a toilet that included my version of plumbing before I knew what that was – the waste had to go somewhere!

3. I have a rescue Pomeranian named Jasper who you'll see often if you follow me on IG. He's been my little buddy since 2011

4. I wouldn't consider myself athletic, but I did play tennis and badminton in high school. I also did a little bit of track in middle school.

5. I moved to Colorado to be closer to nature and because I wanted to find a job that aligned with my values of being environmentally friendly. @Pure_Synergy fit the bill

6. ^ "fit the bill" is a saying, right? Because I'm a quarter Japanese and Swedish, I'm not that great with American sayings

7. I'm shy. If you've ever met me, you've probably figured this out

8. My favorite subject in school was science and this often became the subject of my artwork

9. My obsession with fungi began when I got my first camera at 15 and was introduced to macro photography
